First focal plane vs second focal plane is one of the few rifle scope choices that changes how you use the reticle every time you shoot. Glass quality, turret feel and magnification range all matter, but focal plane decides one thing that is easy to get wrong in the field: whether the marks on your reticle still mean what you think they mean after you turn the magnification ring.

A variable rifle scope forms an image at two points inside the tube. The first is in front of the erector assembly, the group of lenses that moves when you change magnification. The second is behind it, closer to your eye. The reticle has to be placed at one of these two image points so that it looks sharp against the target.
That placement is the whole difference. Put the reticle at the first image point and it is magnified along with the target. Put it at the second and it is not. Everything else in this article follows from that.
In an FFP scope the reticle and the target are magnified together. If a hash mark covers 1 MRAD of the target at 6x, it still covers 1 MRAD at 24x. The reticle simply looks larger at high power and smaller at low power.
This matters when you use the reticle as a measuring tool:
The trade-off shows up at the low end of the zoom range. At low power an FFP reticle can look very thin and its fine marks can be hard to see against dark timber or at dusk. At the top end the reticle can look thick enough to cover part of a small target. Many FFP designs deal with this through illumination or a heavier center section, so check the reticle drawing before you buy.
In an SFP scope the reticle stays the same size in your eye no matter where the magnification ring is set. The target grows, the reticle does not.
That gives SFP scopes two practical strengths:
The limitation is that the hash marks only represent their stated value at one magnification. On many SFP scopes that is the highest power, but it varies by model, so the scope’s manual is the place to confirm it. At any other magnification the subtensions change. If your scope is calibrated at its top power, for example, the marks cover twice as much at half that power. A BDC reticle has the same rule: its drop marks line up with the stated distances only at the calibrated magnification and with the load it was designed around.
If you mostly zero, turn to a comfortable power and hold center, none of this gets in your way. That is why SFP remains the default on many hunting scopes.

For most hunting, the honest answer is that either works if you know how your scope behaves. The deciding question is how you plan to handle longer shots.

For long-range and precision shooting, FFP is the more common choice, for a practical reason: at distance you are constantly reading the reticle. You spot misses, hold for wind and correct between shots, often after changing magnification to find the target or watch the trace. With FFP, all of those reads are valid without adjustment.
SFP can still work at distance if you dial every correction and keep the scope on its calibrated power when you use the reticle. Some shooters prefer the finer high-power aiming point for small targets. It is a workable setup, it just asks for more discipline.

Low-power variable optics make the trade-off especially visible, because they spend so much time at 1x. On an FFP LPVO the reticle is at its smallest exactly when you want a fast aiming point, so these designs usually rely on a bright illuminated center. On an SFP LPVO the reticle stays the same size at 1x, which many AR shooters find easier for close, fast shots. The FFP LPVO pays you back when you zoom in and use the holds at mid-range.
